Roblox Developer Income and UK Tax: A Guide for DevEx Earners

If you earn Robux from a Roblox experience, game passes or UGC items and cash out through the Developer Exchange (DevEx), you have income that HMRC is likely to treat as taxable. This guide explains how DevEx payments work, how UK tax applies to them, what changes for US withholding from November 2026 and how to keep your Roblox bookkeeping in order. Figures were checked against Roblox and GOV.UK guidance in September 2026.

How Roblox DevEx payouts work

DevEx is the programme Roblox uses to convert earned Robux into real money. To use it, you need:

  • at least 30,000 earned Robux (purchased Robux do not count)
  • to be 13 or older, with a verified email address on your Roblox account
  • a DevEx portal account in your legal name
  • a valid US tax form on file, which for UK creators is the W-8BEN

The standard rate is US$0.0038 per earned Robux, so 30,000 Robux converts to $114. Robux earned before 5 September 2025 convert at the older rate of $0.0035, and Roblox pays a higher rate on some earnings for eligible creators aged 18 and over. You can cash out once a calendar month, and payments go through Roblox’s payment provider, Tipalti, by bank transfer, PayPal or other methods depending on your country. If you choose to be paid in pounds, a currency conversion fee applies.

US withholding from 1 November 2026

Roblox has announced that from 1 November 2026, DevEx payments are treated as royalties for US tax purposes. For creators outside the US, that means up to 30% US tax may be withheld on the part of your earnings that comes from purchases by US players, unless you claim a lower rate under a tax treaty. The UK and US treaty generally allows a lower rate for UK residents, but you only get it if your W-8BEN is complete and includes a tax identification number. If Roblox does not hold valid tax information, backup withholding of 24% may apply to the whole payout.

Check your tax details in the DevEx portal before November. If US tax is withheld, keep the Form 1042-S that Roblox issues, because you may be able to claim credit for it against your UK tax.

Is Roblox income taxable in the UK?

In most cases, yes. If you build games or items with the aim of earning from them, HMRC is likely to see that as a trade, and your DevEx payouts are self-employed income. The key points:

  • The trading allowance. The first £1,000 of gross trading income in a tax year is covered by the trading allowance. The £1,000 is measured on income before costs, not on profit, and it covers all your trading income together, not just Roblox.
  • Registering for Self Assessment. If your gross trading income is over £1,000 in a tax year, register for Self Assessment by 5 October after that tax year ends. For the 2025/26 tax year, that deadline is 5 October 2026.
  • Income Tax and National Insurance. Your profit is added to any other income. Most people have a £12,570 personal allowance, so a student with no other income may owe no Income Tax on a modest profit, but the return still has to be filed.
  • Currency. Record each payout in pounds, using the amount that reached your account or the exchange rate on the day you were paid.

Most sole traders now use the cash basis by default, which counts income when you are paid. If you hold a large balance of earned Robux that you have not cashed out, talk to your accountant about how and when it should be reported.

What costs can Roblox developers claim?

You can deduct costs incurred wholly and exclusively for your Roblox business. Common examples include:

  • computers, graphics tablets and other equipment, usually claimed through capital allowances
  • software subscriptions, plugins and asset store purchases
  • payments to other developers, artists or scripters you commission
  • Robux spent on advertising or sponsoring your experience
  • a proportion of your internet and phone costs

If you claim actual costs, you cannot also use the £1,000 trading allowance. For most active developers, claiming actual costs gives the better result once income passes a few thousand pounds.

Young developers under 18

DevEx is open from age 13, and there is no lower age limit for paying tax. A child who earns over £1,000 of trading income still needs to register for Self Assessment and file a return, although their personal allowance often means little or no tax is due. HMRC has said that a young person without a National Insurance number can register on paper form SA1. In practice, a parent or guardian usually helps with the registration and keeps the records.

Studios and limited companies

If you work with others or your Roblox income grows, running the business through a limited company may make sense. The company pays Corporation Tax on its profits, and you take money out as salary or dividends. It adds admin, including annual accounts and a Corporation Tax return, so it is worth modelling your figures before you switch. Our guide to whether to set up a limited company explains the trade-offs, and our company formation service handles the set-up.

Roblox bookkeeping: what to keep

  • DevEx cash-out confirmations and your Tipalti payment history
  • bank statements showing each payout, with the amount in pounds
  • receipts and invoices for equipment, software and commissioned work
  • records of Robux spent on advertising
  • any Form 1042-S showing US tax withheld

Keep these for at least five years after the 31 January filing deadline for each tax year. A simple spreadsheet works at the start, and cloud bookkeeping in Xero becomes worthwhile as payouts become regular. From April 2027, sole traders with qualifying income over £30,000 also fall into Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay tax on Robux?

You pay tax on the money you receive when you cash out through DevEx, as part of your trading income. If your total gross trading income is £1,000 or less in a tax year, the trading allowance usually covers it.

Do I need to tell HMRC about my Roblox income?

Yes, if your gross trading income from Roblox and any other self-employment is more than £1,000 in a tax year. Register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the end of that tax year.

Does the US withholding change mean I pay tax twice?

Not usually. If you claim treaty relief on your W-8BEN, US withholding should be reduced. Any US tax still withheld can usually be offset through foreign tax credit relief on your UK return.

Can I pay my child’s Roblox income into my own account?

The income belongs to the person who earns it. Paying it into a parent’s account does not change whose income it is, and it makes the records harder to follow. A separate account in the young person’s name keeps things clear.
