How an accountant for Instagram influencers UK handles your income
Instagram income rarely arrives as one simple payment, and gifted products catch out more influencers than any other income type.
Sponsored posts and paid partnerships
Sponsored posts, Reels, Stories and paid partnerships are business income that should be properly recorded and supported by invoices where appropriate. We help with invoicing, chasing late payment and VAT once you cross the threshold.
How gifted products are taxed
If you receive a product in return for promoting it, HMRC treats its value as income, even when no money changes hands. A genuine gift with no obligation to post is treated differently, so we record which is which.
Affiliate links and Instagram Shopping
Commission from affiliate links, LTK and Instagram Shopping generally forms part of your trading income, often in irregular amounts across several platforms, which we reconcile against your tracking.
Agency commission
Where the brand deal is earned by you and the agency is separately entitled to commission, records should reflect both amounts rather than just the net bank payment.
Multi-platform income
Many Instagram influencers also earn from TikTok, YouTube, UGC brand work or affiliate platforms. We combine it into one clear monthly figure and one tax return. See our Influencers and content creators hub, or our TikTok, YouTuber and UGC creator accountant pages for more.
Tax, VAT and expenses for Instagram influencers
The right structure and the right claims depend on how much your content brings in, not on a generic rule of thumb.
Most influencers start out as sole traders. The £1,000 trading allowance means you do not need to declare trading income of £1,000 or less in a tax year. Above that, you need to register for Self Assessment.
There is no fixed income level at which becoming a limited company automatically makes sense. The right structure depends on your profits, personal income needs, other income, how much you plan to leave in the business and your longer-term plans. NDCA can compare the options using your actual figures.
UK VAT registration is generally compulsory once your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000. For Instagram influencers, VAT treatment can also depend on the nature of the income and who the customer is, particularly where brands or agencies are overseas.
Camera and lighting equipment, editing software and a proportion of home costs may be allowable where they meet the relevant tax rules. Ordinary personal clothing is not automatically deductible simply because it appears in your content, and only the business-use element of a dual-purpose item may be claimable. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to self-employed people above set HMRC thresholds, phased in from April 2026.
How NDCA works
What you can expect:
We work with influencers specifically, so we already understand gifted products and agency commission without lengthy explanation. One fixed monthly fee covers your bookkeeping, VAT if applicable and your annual return, with a named accountant who answers you directly and normally replies the same day.
The software we use: Xero and Apron
Modern tools built for how creators actually get paid.
We use Xero to keep your bookkeeping organised and connected to your bank account, so brand deal payments and affiliate income are categorised automatically. We use Apron to capture your receipts and supplier bills and send them into Xero.

Instagram income getting complicated?

Instagram influencer accounting FAQs
Yes. Everything you earn through Instagram, including the value of products you are paid in, counts as taxable trading income for UK residents. You then pay Income Tax and Class 4 National Insurance on your profit.
Affiliate commission from links, LTK and Instagram Shopping is trading income, taxed the same way as your other earnings. Payouts often arrive from several platforms and currencies, so we reconcile each one in pounds.
Yes, when you receive them in return for promoting the product, they are taxed as income based on their value. A genuine gift with no strings attached is not.
Anything bought wholly for your content business, such as kit and software, plus a share of home costs. Everyday clothing does not qualify, even when it appears in your content.
It depends on your profits, how much you take out and your plans for the business, so there is no single figure. We compare both structures using your real numbers before you decide.
Once your UK taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12 months, or is expected to within the next 30 days. Services supplied to overseas brands are usually outside the scope of UK VAT, so we check who your customers are before confirming your position.
