Do you need to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
MTD for Income Tax applies once your qualifying income passes a threshold that steps down each year:
- Qualifying income over £50,000: MTD applies from 6 April 2026
- Qualifying income over £30,000: MTD applies from 6 April 2027
- Qualifying income over £20,000: MTD applies from 6 April 2028
Qualifying income is your total income from self-employment and property before expenses, not your profit. It is added together where you have both.
If you are not sure whether MTD applies to you, book a free consultation using the box on this page and we will check your position with you.
MTD for Income Tax, handled by NDCA
You do not need to become an MTD expert. NDCA handles it for you, from setup through to your year-end tax return.
Setup
Getting your accounting software and digital records ready for MTD.
Bookkeeping
Keeping income, expenses, invoices and receipts properly recorded.
Quarterly reporting
Preparing and submitting your quarterly updates to HMRC.
Year-end tax return
Completing your year-end tax return and final declaration.
Less MTD admin. More time to run the business.
Instead of keeping up with quarterly MTD requirements yourself, you send us your records and your accountant takes it from there.
Records stay up to date. Quarterly deadlines are managed. There is a real accountant to speak to when something needs explaining.
Why choose NDCA for MTD?
Fixed monthly fee
Quarterly MTD submissions are included, with no separate charge each time one is due.
Real accountant
A named accountant handles your MTD work, and you can speak to them directly.
Xero-based
Your accounting records are kept digital and up to date in Xero.
One service
Bookkeeping, MTD reporting and tax work brought together under one accountant.
Is it time to hand over the MTD?
Most sole traders and landlords would rather run their business than keep up with MTD requirements. NDCA can take on:
- Your bookkeeping
- Your digital records
- Your quarterly submissions
- Your year-end tax work
- Keeping everything up to date throughout the year
You send us what we need. We take care of the rest.
Who we help with MTD
NDCA works with sole traders and landlords, including those with both business and property income. Some clients are already affected by MTD, others are preparing for the next threshold change.
Not sure where you fit? We can assess your circumstances and explain exactly what applies.
Already using Xero? We will take it from there.
NDCA uses Xero to keep your accounting records digital and manage your MTD submissions. If you are already on Xero, we plug straight in. If not, we move you across as part of onboarding.
Keep receipts and invoices digital
MTD needs digital records, not a shoebox of receipts. Send a photo of a receipt or forward a supplier invoice through Apron, and we record it for you.
You send us the records. We keep the bookkeeping organised.
Your MTD reporting cycle
We keep your records current, prepare your quarterly MTD updates and submit them to HMRC. At year end, we complete the remaining tax work, so you are never facing a filing deadline on your own.
A worked example: an MTD timeline
Say you are a sole trader with £38,000 of turnover who also receives £16,000 of rent, so your 2024/25 return shows qualifying income of £54,000. Turnover and rent are added together, so MTD for Income Tax applies to you from 6 April 2026.
For 2026/27 you send four quarterly updates, then submit your final return by 31 January 2028. We send the updates from your records each quarter, so the final return holds no surprises.
How much does MTD accounting cost?
Your monthly fee depends on the work required. Quarterly MTD submissions are included in your fixed monthly fee, with no separate charge every time a submission is due.
