Accounting that understands how technology businesses work

Five things any UK tech, SaaS or AI business should get right early.

SaaS and recurring revenue

Deferred revenue needs recognising correctly, and MRR, ARR and churn need to reconcile to it rather than live in a spreadsheet. We report recurring revenue the way investors and lenders expect.

R&D tax relief

Eligibility depends on your specific activity and cannot be assumed. We assess what is likely to qualify and prepare a claim built to stand up to scrutiny.

Investor reporting and fundraising

SEIS, EIS and priced funding rounds come with reporting expectations. We prepare management accounts that hold up in due diligence.

AI businesses

Compute costs, GPU capex and model development spend affect your numbers differently to a typical software business. We account for them correctly from the start.

International growth

Hiring overseas, billing in other currencies or setting up a US or EU entity all have UK tax and VAT consequences. We handle the UK side and work alongside local advisers abroad.

Why technology businesses choose NDCA

What you can expect:

UK-wide remote support

We work with technology businesses across the UK on Xero as standard. NDCA is ACCA-regulated throughout.

Support as your technology business grows

As you grow, we help set up EMI option schemes and support SEIS and EIS advance assurance for further funding rounds, prepare management accounts that inform real decisions and keep R&D claims consistent as your engineering spend grows. Allowable expenses are claimed correctly, not guessed at.

Cloud accounting that keeps your numbers current

Switching from another accountant

If you already have an accountant and the reporting cannot keep up with your SaaS metrics, switching is simpler than people think. We send your current accountant a professional clearance letter, collect your records and pick up where they left off. How long it takes depends mainly on how quickly your previous accountant sends the records across, and we keep you updated throughout.

You do not need to wait for year-end. You do not need an awkward phone call. We handle it.

NDCA accountant for UK tech SaaS and AI businesses

Accountant for UK tech, SaaS & AI businesses: FAQs

Eligibility depends on your specific R&D activity and cannot be assumed. Most companies now claim under the merged R&D Expenditure Credit (RDEC) scheme, and loss-making SMEs with R&D spend of at least 30% of total expenditure may instead qualify for the Enhanced R&D Intensive Support (ERIS) scheme. First-time claimants must notify HMRC within six months of the period end. We assess your actual activity first.

SaaS and subscription revenue must be recognised over the period it relates to, not when the cash arrives. Annual contracts, trials and multi-year deals raise deferred revenue questions a normal bookkeeping setup is not built for. We track MRR, ARR and deferred revenue correctly from the start.

An EMI scheme lets qualifying companies grant tax-advantaged share options to employees, which is common among venture-backed and scaling tech businesses. We help you check whether your company and employees qualify, set the scheme up correctly and keep the ongoing valuations and reporting compliant.

You must register for VAT once your taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, though many tech businesses register earlier if it suits their customer base or cost structure. We help you decide the right timing for your business and handle the registration and ongoing returns.

Yes. NDCA is ACCA-regulated, which means our work is carried out to a recognised professional standard with the oversight that comes with it.

Yes. Many tech companies spend months building before the first sale. We keep the books from day one, claim R&D tax relief on qualifying development costs and look at VAT registration early, because a company can register voluntarily before it has sales and reclaim VAT on its costs.

Yes. We work with your lawyers on the share valuation agreed with HMRC, notify HMRC of each grant by 6 July after the end of the tax year in which it was made and file the annual return by the same date. Where the option price is at least the agreed market value, employees usually pay no Income Tax or National Insurance when they exercise.
