Twitch payouts aren’t always as simple as they look

Twitch income can include subscriptions, Prime Gaming, Bits, advertising, sponsorships and affiliate income, often alongside other platforms. What lands in your bank account does not always tell the full story, since platform fees and deductions can affect the payout.

NDCA reconciles your Twitch income and payouts so your accounts reflect the underlying activity, not just the bank deposits.

Do Twitch Streamers Pay Tax in the UK?

Income from streaming activity can be taxable in the UK, depending on the nature of the income and how the activity is carried out.

Twitch income, including subscriptions, Bits, advertising and sponsorship payments, generally needs to be recorded and reported through Self Assessment.

What Expenses Can Twitch Streamers Claim?

Genuine business expenses may be deductible where they meet HMRC rules on wholly and exclusively business use, including:

  • Gaming PC, monitors and upgrades
  • Microphones, cameras and lighting
  • Streaming and editing software
  • A relevant share of internet costs
  • Eligible home-working costs

Costs with both personal and business use may need to be apportioned.

Making Tax Digital for Twitch Streamers

Qualifying self-employed streamers may be affected by Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, introduced in phases from April 2026. Digital record-keeping and quarterly updates will replace the annual return, and NDCA can help with this transition.

Streaming on Twitch and Other Platforms?

Many streamers earn beyond Twitch too, through YouTube, Kick, TikTok, Patreon and brand deals. NDCA brings these income streams together into one accounting system.

We also work with creators on other platforms, including our Kick streamer accountant, YouTuber accountant and content creator accountant services.

Twitch streamer accounting FAQs

Yes, income from Twitch streaming can be taxable in the UK. The treatment depends on the type of income and how it arises. Most streamers report Twitch income through Self Assessment, and NDCA can review your situation if you are unsure.

Twitch income is generally declared through Self Assessment as part of your annual tax return, alongside any other income you receive. NDCA can help you keep accurate records and prepare your return each year.

If your Twitch activity amounts to a trade and your income is above the trading allowance, you will usually need to register as self-employed and file a Self Assessment return. NDCA can help you work out whether and when you need to register.

A gaming PC used for streaming may be an allowable expense where it meets HMRC rules on wholly and exclusively business use, but this is not automatic. NDCA can help you work out what may be claimed for your setup.

UK VAT registration is generally required once your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in a rolling 12-month period, or is expected to in the next 30 days. This applies across all of your taxable income, not just Twitch. NDCA can help you monitor this.

There is no fixed income level at which becoming a limited company automatically makes sense. The right structure depends on your profits, personal income needs, other income, how much you plan to leave in the business and your longer-term plans. NDCA can compare the options using your actual figures.

Sponsorships, brand deals and income from other platforms are treated as part of your overall trading income alongside your Twitch payouts, so your tax position reflects your full creator income.
