How to Add Corporation Tax to Your Government Gateway Account

If you’ve registered a limited company, HMRC issues your Corporation Tax reference automatically — but that does not mean it shows up in your Government Gateway business tax account by itself. Enrolling for Corporation Tax online is a separate step, and it trips people up regularly, especially around which type of Gateway account it needs to sit on. Here’s exactly how to add it.

What you’ll need before you start

  • Your company’s Government Gateway user ID and password, for an Organisation type account, not a personal one
  • Your company’s 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), sent by HMRC by post shortly after incorporation
  • Your Companies House Company Registration Number (CRN)
  • The date your company started trading, or became active for Corporation Tax purposes
  • The date your first set of accounts is made up to

If you’ve misplaced your UTR, you can ask HMRC to post a copy to your company’s registered address via gov.uk.

Which situation you’re in

Your company was incorporated recently

When you set up a limited company through Companies House, HMRC is often notified automatically and issues a UTR by post within a couple of weeks. That registers the company for Corporation Tax in HMRC’s systems, but it does not automatically add Corporation Tax to any Government Gateway account — you still need to enrol for the online service separately once you have your UTR.

Your company has been trading for a while but Corporation Tax isn’t showing online

This is common when an accountant handled the original registration, when the company was incorporated some time ago and the online enrolment step was missed, or when you’re trying to check the wrong Gateway account. Follow the steps below to add it.

How to add Corporation Tax to your Government Gateway account, step by step

Step 1 — Sign in to your business tax account

Go to gov.uk/log-in-register-hmrc-online-services and sign in using the company’s Government Gateway details. If the company has never used HMRC online services before, you’ll be prompted to create sign-in details as part of this process.

Step 2 — Find the option to add a tax, duty or scheme

From the business tax account home screen, look for ‘Services you can add’ or ‘Get online access to a tax, duty or scheme’, then choose to add or enrol for a new service.

Step 3 — Select Corporation Tax

Choose Corporation Tax from the list and select ‘Enrol for service’.

Step 4 — Enter your company details

You’ll be asked for your UTR, Company Registration Number, the date your company started trading, and the date your first accounts are made up to. Enter the CRN exactly as shown on Companies House, without adding letters or leading zeros that aren’t part of the number.

Step 5 — Review and submit

Check everything against your UTR letter and Companies House record before confirming.

Step 6 — Wait for your activation code

HMRC posts an activation code to your company’s registered address, usually within 10 days in the UK (up to 21 days if the address is abroad). Once it arrives, sign back in and enter the code to activate Corporation Tax on the account.

Why the account type matters

Corporation Tax can only be added to an Organisation type Government Gateway account, not an Individual one. If you originally set up a Gateway ID for personal Self Assessment and then try to add Corporation Tax to it, it won’t work — you’ll need to register a separate Organisation account for the company itself, even if you’re the sole director. This is the single most common reason Corporation Tax enrolment fails.

Letting your accountant manage Corporation Tax for you

You can authorise an accountant to deal with Corporation Tax on the company’s behalf through their own agent services account, separately from adding it to your own Gateway login. This is how we handle Corporation Tax for clients at NDCA — once authorised, we take care of registration, calculations and filing, while you keep whatever access you want to your own business tax account. Common problems and how to fix them

You’re using a personal Gateway account instead of an Organisation one

As above, this is the most frequent cause of failure. Set up a dedicated Organisation account for the company if you haven’t already.

Your UTR or CRN doesn’t match

Double-check both against your official HMRC UTR letter and your Companies House record. A single digit out, or an extra character in the CRN, will cause the enrolment to fail.

You haven’t received a UTR yet

If it’s been more than a few weeks since incorporation and you still don’t have a UTR, contact HMRC directly, as the automatic registration from Companies House can occasionally fail to go through.

The activation code has expired or gone missing

Activation codes are time-limited. If yours has expired or never arrived, you’ll need to request the Corporation Tax enrolment again from your business tax account.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register for Corporation Tax separately from adding it to Government Gateway?

Usually not from scratch — incorporating a company normally triggers automatic registration and a UTR by post. What you’re doing here is enrolling for the online service so you can see and manage it through your Government Gateway account.

How long does the whole process take?

The enrolment itself takes a few minutes online. The activation code by post typically takes up to 10 working days in the UK, and you’ll need that before the service is fully active.

What if my company hasn’t started trading yet?

You still need to register for Corporation Tax within 3 months of starting to trade. If you haven’t started trading, you may not need to enrol for the online service immediately, though many companies set it up early so everything is ready when needed.

Can my accountant register and manage this instead of me?

Yes. Authorising an accountant as your agent means they handle registration, returns and deadlines without needing your own Gateway login. If you’d rather hand this off, we can manage Corporation Tax for you as part of our standard service.
